The Eclipse at Gorges
Saturday, August 19th to Monday, August 21st
Please join us any day of a special, 3 day event at Gorges State Park. The Eclipse at Gorges starts Saturday with a focus on nature and the beauty of the Park through staff-led hikes and Visitors Center tours. Sunday is Funday, with family-friendly activities including music, face painting, food trucks and a raptor presentation by the always-popular Peter Kipp of Curtis-Wright Falconry. Monday is Science Day, with the first, total solar eclipse happening in the US mainland in 375 years. We are so lucky that the Park is square in the Path of Totality where our sunset and sunrise experience will last from about 1 PM through 4 PM. Total darkness is expected at approximately 2:35 pm and will last for over two minutes. Call the Park at (828) 966-9099 for more information.

Have You Heard? There's an Eclipse Coming!
Posted on Jun 26th, 2017 Comments (0)
The Activities Committee of Burlingame Country Club hosted on Friday, June 23, a Burlingame Speaker Series event with presenters from the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI). Over 130 people came to hear Lebby Moran and Chris Price discuss the upcoming total solar eclipse taking place in the mid afternoon of Monday, August 21. PARI is the only place in the world where the total solar eclipse will occur directly over some of the most advanced astronomical equipment in the world: two 26-meter radio telescopes and a 12 meter radio telescope. Because of this unique convergence, PARI will be able to conduct scientific study of this eclipse that has never before been possible.

For those of you who missed it, or for those who would like to review Ebby's material again, here is the link to her presentation: Eclipse to Remember.

PARI is a fascinating place to visit and has a rich history in our space program and with the Department of Defense. Learn more about PARI and its programs by clicking PARI.

The next edition of the Burlingame Speaker Series is on Friday, July 21, when the Club welcomes Superintendent Steve Pagano of Gorges State Park. Club members should register to attend on burlingameccwnc.com and non-Club members should register by clicking Hear Steve Pagano.

Thanking Pete Myles

The Pete Myles Pavilion at Miller Falls.

This is somewhat old news, but important nonetheless. Our past BPOA Board president, Pete Myles, worked long, diligently, and hard to improve our park at Miller Falls. It remains one of his passions. Last fall, the BPOA honored Pete my naming our picnic pavilion, into which Pete dedicated many hours of hard work, the Pete Myles Pavilion at Miller Falls. Here is a picture from that event:

Thanks, Pete, for all you have done, and continue to do, for our community!
